We are continuously improving how we live the values of equity, belonging, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. Our goal is for IWK Health to be a safe and supportive space for the people we care for and the professionals we employ, in all their diversity. Accordingly, we are active in our efforts to eliminate discrimination and promote an anti-racist environment.
Working in Mi’kma’ki and providing care to those across Atlantic Canada is a shared privilege with the original inhabitants. There are 13 First Nation communities across Nova Scotia, and more than 50 historic African Nova Scotian communities who also have a long, deep, and complex history here dating back over 400 years. We have the highest percentage of people with disabilities in the country, as well as the highest proportions of transgender and non-binary people.
We welcome all who self-identify as Indigenous, Black/African Nova Scotians, Persons of Colour, Immigrants/Newcomers, Persons with Disabilities, 2SLGBTQIA+ to apply to support our goal for our workforce to be representative of the patients, families, and communities that we care for at all job levels. We want all our employees to feel celebrated and empowered, while feeling proud of the work they do while building a career at IWK Health. Diverse identities and lived experiences build a strong team dynamic, and makes needed, authentic care more accessible to patients, families, and communities.
In pursuit of these goals and to better live these values, we have created an Office of Equity & Belonging. This team is growing as dedicated professionals join our team to support patients and employees from Indigenous and equity communities.
IWK Health is also a Designated Employer with the Atlantic Immigration Program, offering support for those seeking permanent residency in Canada.
