The Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager of Children’s Intensive Service (CIS), and under the direction of the Team Leader, the doctoral level Clinical Psychologist is a member of the interdisciplinary team that provides holistic and comprehensive care to meet the needs of families and their children aged 6-12 years with severe disruptive behavior.  The doctoral Clinical Psychologist is responsible for the planning and provision of treatment for these families and children.  Responsibilities include evidence-based mental health treatment (family and individual), staff supervision, psychological assessments, consultation with other staff members and community service providers, program development and evaluation.  The doctoral Clinical Psychologist is involved in all aspects of the care continuum from pre-assessment through to discharge/follow-up and will also provide individual and family evidence-based treatments.


The IWK Health Predoctoral Residency Program in Pediatric and Child Adolescent Psychology is both APA and CPA approved.  All Psychologists at the IWK are expected to actively participate in training residents.Clinical services are provided to families in their homes or other community locations whenever possible which will require travel for such visits.  In necessary situations there will be an inpatient component to care.

Hours of Work

Monday – Friday:  7.5 hour days, some evening hours may be required.  Travel inside and outside of HRM will be required.

Your Qualifications

  • Ph.D/ PsyD Degree in Clinical Psychology from an accredited university program required.
  • Completion of an APA or CPA Accredited Predoctoral Internship in Psychology required.
  • Currently registered with or eligible to be registered with the NS Board of Examiners in Psychology.
  • Minimum five (5) years of formal training and clinical experience in child/adolescent mental health.
  • Minimum three (3) years experience post registration with Nova Scotia Board of Examiners in Psychology preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in clinical assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental- health disorders, particularly Disruptive Behavior Disorders and common co-morbid disorders (i.e. Learning Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Mood Disorders. Etc.).
  • Demonstrated understanding of child development, attachment theory and trauma informed care.
  • Demonstrated ability to use evidence-based assessment and treatment methods.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose and formulate treatment protocols for a wide range of child/adolescent mental health issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively consult with other health, social service and education agencies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary care team.
  • Ability to participate in the clinical training activities of the Psychology discipline.
  • Competencies in other languages an asset.
