The Opportunity


•    Reporting to the Manager, Emergency Care, the Emergency Department Nurse Practitioner (NP) will function in an advanced practice role which includes components of clinician, educator, and consultant.
•    The Nurse Practitioner will have responsibilities that include: Utilizing and demonstrating advanced knowledge and decision-making skills to provide care that includes but is not limited to comprehensive physical assessments; ordering and interpretation of diagnostic tests; management of medical conditions; and prescribing medications and treatments; Counseling patients and families about disease process, post hospital follow up care and health promotion; Reconciling laboratory, electrocardiogram and diagnostic imaging studies and follow-up as appropriate; Developing, promoting and maintaining an interdisciplinary collaboration within a team environment; Working in partnership with nurses to provide holistic patient/family centered care and advance the practice of emergency nursing within a team environment; assuming a leadership role related to nursing practice issues; Dedication to continuing learning for self and team; Participating in Emergency care team discussions as required, Offering input and energy into efforts at improving team efficiency and functioning.

Hours of Work

Rotational, days, evenings, weekends.

Your Qualifications

•    Successful completion of a Masters degree in nursing with Clinical Nurse Practitioner Certification (Pediatric or Family all ages accepted).
•    Current license (or eligible) to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in Nova Scotia (as per the Nova Scotia College of Nursing).
•    Current successful completion of CPR Level-C Healthcare Provider within the last 12 months required.
•    Minimum of 2 years’ experience in pediatric nursing required.
•    Demonstrated clinical competence and experience in pediatric emergency nursing preferred.
•    Demonstrated understanding of evidenced based practice and utilization of research in practice.
•    Demonstrated sound judgment, independent decision-making and leadership skills required.
•    Demonstrated competence in interpersonal relations, problem solving, communication, negotiation, assertiveness, and innovation.
•    Demonstrated ability to work and practice autonomously.
•    Demonstrated ability to adapt to constantly changing, unpredictable situations.
•    Commitment to family centered care.
•    Commitment to patient safety and continuous quality improvement.
•    Competencies in other languages an asset; French preferred.
