The Opportunity

The current position is with the Family Intensive Outreach Service (FIOS) of the Adolescent Intensive Services portfolio. FIOS is a community-based outreach service that provides intensive treatment to clients and their families, struggling with Disruptive Behaviour Disorders.

Reporting to the Clinical Manager of Adolescent Intensive Services, and under the direction of the team lead, the Clinical Psychologist is responsible for the planning and provision of treatment with children/youth and their families struggling with Disruptive Behaviour Disorders across the age spectrum of the MHA program. Responsibilities include evidence-based mental health treatment (family and individual), staff supervision, psychological assessments, consultation with other staff members and community service providers, program development and evaluation. 

Clinical services are provided to the family in their homes or another location convenient to them requiring the incumbent to travel regularly within Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM). 

Hours of Work

Monday to Friday, 7.5 hours days

Your Qualifications

  • Ph.D/PsyD Degree in Clinical Psychology from an accredited university program. 
  • Completion of an APA or CPA Accredited Predoctoral Internship in Psychology. 
  • Currently registered, or eligible to be registered, with the Nova Scotia Board of Examiners in Psychology.
  • Minimum five (5) years of formal training and clinical experience in child/adolescent mental health; at least two years clinical experience as a PhD/DPsych prepared Psychologist. 
  • Demonstrated experience and skills in assessment and treatment of youth and families where a young person is struggling with mental health and/or addictions issues. A particular skill set in working with disruptive behaviours is an asset.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in providing both family and individual therapy.
  • Recent experience in providing clinical supervision to staff/team preferred as well as demonstrated ability to consult with both other professionals.
  • Theoretical knowledge and practice competency in a family systems approach preferred. Knowledge and experience in the Ecosystemic Structural Family Therapy model an asset. 
  • Demonstrated excellence in communication, leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated excellent time management, workload prioritization, and organizational skills. 
  • Demonstrated conflict resolution skills.  
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a member of an interprofessional care team, while effectively carrying out administrative and clinical responsibilities. 
  • Working knowledge of Trauma Informed Care preferred. 
  • NCI Certification required. 
  • Successful completion of CPR Level C Health Care Provider course in the last 12 months required.
  • Understanding of, and commitment to, evidence informed practice/best practice. 
  • Ability to participate in the clinical training activities of the Psychology Discipline.
  • Competencies in other languages an asset.
  • Holds a valid minimal Class 5 Nova Scotia driver’s license and reliable transportation required.
